In September 2006 Eastern acquired a coal handling and distribution facility
at the port of Timaru on the central east coast of the South Island. Eastern
Coal Supplies Ltd (formerly the Somervilles Fuel Centre) is strategically located
approximately mid way between the company’s 
Cascade mine on the north west coast,
and Takitimu mine in Southland.
In addition to providing a retail outlet for
domestic sales, the yard is used as a stockpiling, blending and distribution
centre delivering coal to the nearby industrial users.
